The Power of Payroll Deductions

Rationale for a Reliable Revenue Source

As a person who pioneered in opening payroll deduction markets in public and private sectors for the Black United Fund of New York, I, Kermit Eady, begin by saying to all 501(c)(3) tax exempt organizations, particularly in the Black community, that the best way to raise money in America and most countries around the world,  is through some kind of a payroll deduction plan. In America, the Federal government raised over 2.5 trillion dollars in taxes and voluntary US Savings Bonds from its population in 2006.

Black Workforce in America

When we look at the Black workforce in America, averaging one dollar across this employment base, based on fifty-two weeks, one billion four hundred thirty-two thousand nine hundred twelve dollars, i.e.,  $1,432,912,000 could be raised on a yearly basis and reinvested into the development of an economic infrastructure in Black America, leveraging these dollars into institution building, as Black United Fund of New York did over its 25-year history. This would give Black America the kind of power it needs to become a major player in the making of policy in this country and around this world.

                 Black Workforce in New York

According to the New York State Department of Labor, the Black workforce in New York in 2006 was 1,451,100.  Averaging one dollar a paycheck on a 52-week basis, the Black community could raise over $75,613,200 per year. Again, leveraging these dollars, as BUFNY did, into institution building would establish a power base in New York that could greatly advance a Black self-help agenda and also influence and determine our political, social and economic conditions throughout the state.

Some established and accessible revenue source markets are...
New York City Combined Municipal Campaign ▪ New York State Employee Federated Appeal
New York Federal Combine Federal Campaign ▪ City University of New York Campaign
New York City Transit Authority Campaign ▪ Health and Hospitals Corporation
Greater Harlem Nursing Home ▪
Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Authority
Westchester County and many more, with organized employee support.

Painless Giving

A person gives six (6) times more when giving through payroll deductions
than they do when they give on a onetime basis.

Predictable Income Flow

Contribution pledges, as committed and reliable revenues, can be collateralized.

Most City, State and Federal payroll deduction systems and many corporate systems are already in place. Fund raising drives in workplace campaigns are completed within four to six weeks.

A sense of pride exists in Black people when they participate in their own growth and development.

Therefore, we say to all Black “Not for Profits” in America, enroll in workplace Payroll Deduction Plans,
so that you can finance our own empowerment and Social Entrepreneurship Programs.
